02 / THE PERSON BEHIND THE PAGES

An outsider’s eye.
A therapist’s ear.

I’m Basil Argento, a queer screenwriter and emerging director based in Ireland. I write about people who don’t quite fit… and the funny, messy, sometimes unsettling ways they try to connect.

Before turning to film, I worked as a mental health counselor. That humanistic perspective still shapes my characters: what they need, what they hide, and what they tell themselves to get through the day.

My work is frequently comedic, sometimes with a dark underbelly, always a bit unusual. The first draft of Oathbreakers reached the quarterfinals of the 2024 Academy Nicholl Fellowships. It is now in its fifth, exponentially stronger, iteration.

Talk to me about animals, mushroom hunting, antiques shopping, and good espresso.

I am currently seeking representation.

03 / FROM PAGE TO SCREEN

A new lens.

I’m developing my practice as a director, drawn to unconventional forms, psychological depth and stories that make room for people at the edges.

My background is in humanistic storytelling. My next chapter is bringing that perspective to the screen.
